Instructions

  1. In a mixing bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let sit for 5-10 minutes until frothy.
  2. In another bowl, mix flour and salt thoroughly.
  3. Combine the yeast mixture and olive oil with the dry ingredients; stir until a dough forms.
  4. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 5-7 minutes until smooth.
  5. Place the kneaded dough in an oiled bowl and cover with a cloth; let rise for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.
  6. Preheat oven to 475°F (245°C).
  7. Punch down the risen dough and divide it into four equal pieces; shape each piece into a baguette.
  8. Place on a parchment-lined baking sheet and let rest for 20 minutes.
  9. Optionally brush tops with beaten egg for a golden finish.
  10. Bake for 20-25 minutes or until golden brown; cool before serving.
